Should Mariano be able to wear #42 belonging to the great Jackie Robinson?

I personally think that it was retired for a reason and he should also have to comply, it should not be worn by an everyday player.Should Mariano be able to wear #42 belonging to the great Jackie Robinson?
noShould Mariano be able to wear #42 belonging to the great Jackie Robinson?
We all know why he still gets to wear the number but the question was it we think he should. personally I don't think he should. Report Abuse

Since Mariano Rivera is the GREATEST player to ever wear the #42, he most certainly should be allowed to wear it. Jackie did a great thing by becoming the first black player to play MLB but if he wasn't black, he'd be a nobody, his stats aren't even that good. Report Abuse

It was retired after Mariano was in the league. Those players were grandfathered in. When he retires, no more will wear in for the Yankees.
true dat
usually when #'s are retired, anyone who currently holds that number is allowed to keep it.
I think he shouldn't.
Jackie wasnt the 1st black player..........so yes he should get to wear it....their were black players in 1880s-1890s (the 1st was Chet White) im guessing him having the last name ';White'; had a lot to do with making Jackie the so -called 1st black player ) the HALL_OF_FAME doesnt call Jackie the 1st black ,why does MLB?
He wore it before MLB retired # 42 in 1997. Rivera wore it first, which is the grandfather clause. Also, there were other players that have worn # 42 like Mo Vaughn, Butch Husky, etc. The Cardinals also retired # 42 for Bruce Sutter, so don't make it look like Rivera was the only one. Rivera wore it since 1995, that is the truth. Live with it.
Rivera had it BEFORE it was retired. So, he should give up a number he's always had, because MLB decides he can't Wear it? Thats not right, Or Fair... I DO understand the importance of Jackie Robinson, but i Sincerely DOUBT, he would have Issue with a Pitcher the Level Of MAriano Rivera being the only player wearing the number.. its not like he's sum scrub lol, he's MARIANO RIVERA. He was the only player with the number at the time of the Retirement, and Considering Who rivera is, they grandfathered him in. I Doubt even Robinson's Family has any issue with it.. a Legendary Player is wearing a Legendary number.
He wears it in honor of Robinson, but I still would have to agree with you that it was retired for a reason.

=D
the great mariano rivera is the last of the players that were wearing #42 when the number was retired. the only other one i can recall was mo vaughn.
i concur
nah he should not.
Rivera should be able to wear the number if he chooses to, but I would have a lot more respect for him if he chose not to.
Mariano is the last (I think) of the guys who were ';grandfathered'; in because he was wearing ';42'; before the decision to retire it league wide.

He will be the last Yankee to wear the number and ';42'; like ';8'; will actually have two names attached to it.

Mariano is a Hall of Famer and he wants to keep wearing the number....I'm personally OK with it as a big Dodger and Jackie Robinson fan...
Rivera is allowed to wear #42 because of the grandfather clause that said active players could continue to wear #42 if they had worn it before its league-wide retirement.

The number was retired in '97. Rivera's worn it since '95, so he was wearing it before it was officially decided that #42 should be retired. I don't see anything wrong with it. He's probably pretty proud to be wearing Jackie Robinson's number.
no1 should be able to wear it
